Respiratory function of Witwatersrand gold-miners; a comparison between radiologically normal miners and control non-mining subjects.

چکیده
The diagnosis of pneumoconiosis during life depends upon an industrial history and radiological examination (Carpenter, Cochrane, Gilson, and Higgins, 1956). However, many miners complain of dyspnoea but have no radiological changes at all. This has led to the supposition that long exposure to industrial dust hazards may lead to pulmonary disability which is not typical pneumoconiosis (Carpenter, and others, 1956; Pemberton, 1956). This disability might be due to a forme fruste of pneumoconiosis or something different, such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema (Pemberton, 1956). It is obviously important in the first place to establish whether, in the mining population as a whole, there

Studies on the nature and aetiology of respiratory disability in Witwatersrand gold-miners free of radiological silicosis.
In an investigation into the cause of symptoms in gold-miners who have no radiological silicosis, the relationship of dyspnoea and physiological disturbances to dust exposure was examined. Forty-five subjects, aged 41 to 45 years, with normal chest radiographs and long service underground were chosen for study from the population of miners past and present. Thirty-four men only were tested, but...
متن کاملOxidative stress and repetitive element methylation changes in artisanal gold miners occupationally exposed to mercury
Mercury (Hg) exposure is a public health concern due to its persistence in the environment and its high toxicity. Such toxicity has been associated with the generation of oxidative stress in occupationally exposed subjects, such as artisanal gold miners. In this study, we characterize occupational exposure to Hg by measuring blood, urine and hair levels, and investigate oxidative stress and DNA...
متن کاملMortality from stomach cancer in Ontario miners.
An excess of mortality from stomach cancer has been found in Ontario gold miners (observed (obs) 104, standardised mortality ratio (SMR) 152, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 125-185) and no excess of stomach cancer could be detected in other miners in Ontario (obs 74, SMR 102, 95% CI 80-128). The excess of stomach cancer appeared five to 19 years after the miners began gold mining in Ontario. ...
متن کاملAirway responsiveness and job selection: a study in coal miners and non-mining controls.
BACKGROUND It has been suggested that health related job selection is a major cause of the healthy worker effect, and may result in inaccurate estimates of health risks of exposures in the working environment. Improved understanding of self selection, including the role of airway hyperresponsiveness, should improve accuracy in estimating occupational risks. METHODS We evaluated symptoms of th...
متن کاملMortality of white South African gold miners.
OBJECTIVES This two part study aimed to determine whether there was an excess mortality generally or for some diseases among middle aged white South African gold miners on the Witwatersrand and whether the underground dust exposure of these miners contributed to the development of lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or ischaemic heart disease (IHD). METHODS A cohort of ...
